Conservative Party leader, Boris Johnson, has won the general election.

To form a majority government, the centre-right party needed 326 seats and gained it just shortly after 5am.

Taking to Twitter during the count, Boris Johnson said: “Thank you to everyone across our great country who voted, who volunteered, who stood as candidates.

“We live in the greatest democracy in the world.”

Iain Duncan Smith, Conservative MP for Chingford and Woodford Green, narrowly held onto his seat, securing 23,481 votes beating Labour on 22,419- a majority of 1,062.

There were fears of the Tories losing the seat, with Mr Johnson scrambling to campaign in the area on Sunday.

Johnson’s win is the best Conservative result since Margaret Thatcher’s campaign in 1987.

It was a dismal night for Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party, despite initially holding onto the lead.
