New research has discovered that travelling to Eastern Asia could cost in excess of £600 in vaccines alone, due to some vaccines not being offered on the NHS.

Research collated by vaccination service Practio found that vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus & polio, hepatitis A, typhoid and cholera are available at no charge, however, the vaccine against rabies, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis and tick-borne encephalitis are expensive.

Practio compared different vaccine recommendations from popular destinations around the world, including China, India, Japan, Mexico, South Africa and Thailand.

According to the collated data, travellers to Thailand may require diphtheria, tetanus & polio, rabies, hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B and Japanese encephalitis vaccines.

This means that the average cost of getting the necessary vaccines for Thailand may amount to £548 — Practio compared the price of the vaccine to three different health centres in the UK; Health Centre Liverpool, York Medical Group and The Exchange Surgery in London.

Although the price of the vaccines is high, Practio tailors the vaccine plan around each individual traveller, meaning some may not require every type of vaccine.

Jonas Nilsen, Co-founder and Medical Doctor at Practio said: “We conduct a risk assessment for each traveller by asking them about their travel plans.

“[We ask the customer] when and how long they are going away for, the kind of activities they plan on doing while abroad; we, of course, look at their medical history and their current vaccination status.

“Based on this risk assessment, we create a tailored vaccine plan, and in that way ensure that the recommended vaccinations are right for the individual.”

Many popular holiday destinations for British people have a risk of dangerous, potentially fatal diseases.

Nilsen continued: “Many of these diseases can be prevented to a high degree by simply getting the vaccines and taking some simple precautions while abroad.

“For example, there is an outbreak of Japanese encephalitis in India at the moment, and this is a serious disease from which one-third of the people with symptoms die.

“It’s therefore important that people are aware of these risks and protect themselves before they travel.”
