Cycling fans from across the globe focused on Wirral today as it hosted Stage 5 of the Tour of Britain.

Starting and finishing in Birkenhead Park, fans had the chance to meet the riders, their teams as well as watching the action via a big screen.

Cyclists left Birkenhead Park before heading to Port Sunlight and Bebington, then covering most of the Wirral including West Kirby and New Brighton.

The 108-mile stage was a celebration of Wirral after Liverpool City Region crowned it Borough of Culture 2019; showcasing the peninsula’s coastlines, history and heritage.

Cllr Pat Hackett, leader of Wirral Council said: “It’s another step in the ladder of Wirral’s great event calendar this year.

“I encourage people to get on their bike because it is so healthy, and a great leisurely lifestyle- not forgetting fun for all the family too.”

Cyclist Ethan Vernon, from team British Cycling, added: “We had a hard day yesterday over the Moors, I’m looking forward to getting back to flat ground and seeing what the Wirral has to offer.’’

Mick Bennett, Race Director of OVO Energy Tour of Britain, commented: “Wirral politicians have recognised the goodwill of Wirral communities; and what Wirral has to offer.
